Cordillera Blanca

Cordillera Blanca on the northern Peruvian Andes, is the world’s largest concentration of glaciers within the tropical zone  –722 within a 723 Km. (450 ml) extension. Cordillera Blanca’s location reaches the maximum altitude from all 20 snowed Cordilleras on the Peruvian Andes. It is located at the Chavin Region (Ancash ex-department), between 200 and 350 Km. (124 and 217 ml) north capital of  Peru- South America- middle west. It belongs to the Andes and goes along the South American west coast edge for about 7,500 Km (4,660 ml).  Along its 180 Km (111 ml) length, 20 to thirty peaks rise above 6,000 mts (19,685 ft.)

Depending on the weather, such mountains as Pucahirca and Huandoy are counted as one or four. The other thirty are higher than the 5,700 m (18,700 ft.): Nevado Huascaran at 6,768 mts (22,204 ft), making it the world’s highest mountain in the tropical zone, and the second highest on the Andes.

This magnificent mountain range has attracted climbers and backpackers for many years, and is now one of the most popular hiking regions in South  America. The mountains are very accessible because the western side of the Cordilleras is uninterrupted by fifteen glacial valleys, creating ideal routes which lead past the peaks west of the main crest and into the center of the range.

When to Go

There is a definite wet and dry season at Cordillera Blanca, which may influence your experience if preparations have not been handled properly. The rainy season is relatively dependable from months October through April which offers some advantages, including greener surroundings and a grater variety of  flowers. Trekkers venturing out during this season should be sure to get an early start and to make camp by early afternoon.

Be aware that even in the dry season, from months May through September, rain is possible, and you should carry with you the necessary equipment. This is also the most frequented season. Expect to run into higher prices than during the wet season, as well as a number of other visitors on the popular trails and peaks.
